Wiping your bowling ball with a towel or wipe can make all the difference when it comes to maximizing your score. Not only does wiping keep your ball in good condition, but it also offers other benefits such as improved hook potential, increased pin action and cleaner returns from the ball return.

After every shot with a bowling balls, bowlers tend to wipe the oil of the bowling ball with a towel to remove oil and dirt. Active resin bowling balls tend to have absorption of oil and your bowling ball will pick up oil over time when throwing the ball. With enough time the coverstock surface of the ball can have oil on your ball which can have less hook on the lane and make the bowling ball fell more oily. By wiping your bowling ball after every shot, this takes off a bit of oil sitting on the surface of the ball.

By using microfiber towel or clean towel, this can help keep your bowling ball clean, keep the effectiveness of your ball, helps help you bowl and keeps the ball lasing longer. I do wipe my ball after shot including my spare ball and use a bowling ball cleaner to keep the ball clean. Wiping your bowling ball can be part of your pre-shot routine just like some pro bowler.

Should you wipe off your bowling ball after each shot?

There is nothing wrong with wipe down the ball after every shot to keep oil off your ball. Now you don’t have to wipe the ball every time, you can go maybe 3 or 4 times during bowling play. You should clean your ball after you are done using them to keep them clean to prevent heavy oil build up over time. Now in league play, you are not allow to clean your bowling balls during league play. You can wipe off your ball for oil build after every shot.

Make sure you use a use a towel or ball towel or a clean rag. When the lanes have heavy oil, I wipe my ball off every shot to get that oil off my ball and that will help my ball hook better. If your ball has a lot of oil on it, then if you throw that ball on heavy oil, then it will not hook as much but if you can wipe of that oil before throwing on heavy oil lane, the ball can read the lane better.

How not wiping off your bowling balls after each throw helps?

On light oil lanes or the lanes is dry with a lot of friction down lane, then I would not wipe off my ball. Ideally with less oil you need some oil so I would not wipe off the oil if any on ball and just use the ball with the oil on it. Since it’s dry, the oil that the ball picks is needed on those lanes. The oil on your bowling ball may help you in the long run.

You can go to a urethane bowling ball which works great for the dry part or dry lanes. Using a reactive resin would have a hard time on dry lanes so if you are on dry lanes, the little oil that it pick up is maybe needed to bowl on those dry lanes. You might want to clean your bowling balls after you are bowling.

How Often Should You Clean a Bowling Ball?

Every one cleans their bowling balls at different times but I tend to clean my bowling balls every 8 to 10 games. Sometimes I clean every week before league play. If you bowling 100 games and you have not cleaned your bowling ball, please seek a bowling pro shop to clean it and they can do oil extraction. They can do a deep clean down the pores of the bowling balls and they can soak it if need be.

Bowling Ball Cleaning Is Necessary

To keep your bowling ball working right and hooking the same over time, wiping your ball is going to help that bowling ball last longer. The last thing you want is when you throw a good shot and the ball does not hook at all just because you didn’t clean it is a bad feeling. I wipe mine more often now then I did in the past.
